Improve Your Brushing and Flossing with These Tips

Improve Your Brushing and Flossing with These Tips

May 07, 2018

Did you know that roughly 50% of Americans brush their teeth only once a day? Most people brush their teeth for only 30 seconds instead of the recommended 2 minutes.

Best Type of Toothbrush to Use

Our Multnomah Village dentist suggests using a small to medium-toothbrush head that is able to reach into corners of your mouth for proper cleaning. We also recommend using rounded, multi-tufted toothbrushes with nylon bristles or filaments that clean without hurting your gums.

Similarly, soft-bristled toothbrushes work better for patients with sensitive teeth. Toothbrushes with smaller heads are also ideal for those with angular or crooked teeth. If needed, patients can use specially-designed toothbrushes with large handles and small heads.

It’s best to change your toothbrush every two-three months when the bristles become splayed. Patients can also use safe disclosing tablets that help reveal plaque build-up in the mouth. This way, you can identify spots that need better brushing.

Correct Brushing Techniques

Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and use small, circular movements to clean the inner, outer, and biting surfaces of your teeth. Brush your tongue also to get rid of odor-causing bacteria that are responsible for bad breath.

Avoid brushing too aggressively or using a hard toothbrush as this may erode your tooth enamel. If your child is under the age of seven, we recommend that you keep a close watch on them to see that they do not swallow toothpaste.

Important Don’ts of Flossing

Flossing only takes a few minutes every day, but your gums will thank you for your effort. There are a few important tips to keep in mind while flossing:

  • Don’t reuse floss thread
  • Don’t be overly aggressive when you floss; be gentle and consistent
  • Don’t worry if your gums bleed a little at first. As you floss regularly, your gums will become healthier over time
